About Divorce
A marriage is a legal contract between two people in a relationship that entitles each spouse to certain rights and requires each to fulfill certain responsibilities, and a divorce is a dissolution of that marriage contract. When a couple gets divorced, a legal proceeding must occur that terminates the marital contract. The person filing for divorce is called the “plaintiff” or “petitioner” and the other party is called the “defendant” or “respondent”. In order to file for a divorce you have to have a reason which is called “grounds”. Grounds can include adultery, irreconcilable differences or abuse to name a few, but it will vary from state to state based on the state’s laws. Divorces can be “contested”, “disputed” or Uncontested but either way, a divorce cannot be undone. After your divorce process is complete and matters have been resolved, the judge will sign the final decree and you are legally divorced. About Annulments
An annulment is when a marriage is legally declared null and void. 
Annulments are different from divorce because if a marriage is annulled, it was considered invalid from the beginning, which makes it void. Sometimes an annulment takes place because the marriage was not legally valid under the laws where the marriage took place, which would legally make it a void marriage. Another way a marriage can be annulled is if one of the parties of the marriage contests in court to void the marriage because they were threatened or coerced to get married or if they were not of legal age and did not have parental or guardian consent. Other ways to nullify a marriage is if there was infidelity, if one of the partners is emotionally or mentally abused, if there is blood relation between the two spouses making them family or if one of the parties was not in the correct mental or physical states at the time of the marriage. Many annulments occur after very short marriages, so there is normally not a need to divide assets or debts, or decide custody of children, but in the case of annulment in a longer marriage, the court will need to divide any property of the two spouses. If there are children involved, the children are considered legitimate and the court also has the ability to establish the rights and obligations of the two spouses to those children.
